Get to know us - Abbie Rockwell

Abbie Rockwell started her professional life as a flutist and discovered her love of teaching when, after graduating from Bard college, she volunteered to help an elementary music teacher in Los Angeles several days of week. She was an elementary music aide while working on her credential and then was a traveling instrumental music teacher for 2 years in South-Central Los Angeles and then became the music teacher at Miramonte Elementary, also in south-central L.A., teaching band, orchestra, two choirs, and classroom music, for seven years. During this time she attended the University of Southern California and received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. She then taught for two years in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, three years in Canberra, Australia, eighteen years in Livermore and 3 years in Pleasanton before coming to Ruby Bridges. 2017-8 is her 3rd year at Ruby Bridges. Abbie has attended World Music Drumming workshops the last two summers and is implementing a World Music Drumming curriculum at Ruby Bridges for the upper grades, as well as teaching the elements of music: beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, form and expressive elements, to all grade levels. Study of the recorder starts in third grade and continues through the end of fifth grade.
